Campus 1
About the city
João Pessoa is home to Campus I of the Federal University of Paraíba. It is the third oldest state capital city in Brazil, and it is known as the “city where the sun rises first”.
João Pessoa concentrates the biggest economy of the state of Paraíba while tourism is one of its main economic activities. Residents and visitors can visit beautiful beaches and the natural pools of Picãozinho and Ponta do Seixas, known for being the easternmost point of the Americas. At the end of the day, it is time to enjoy the famous sunset at Jacaré Beach (Praia do Jacaré) and listen to Jurandy do Sax play Ravel's Bolero on the saxophone in his small motor boat. He has been doing this every day for over 20 years.

Beaches aside, another attraction is the Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park, known as “Bica” due to a natural source of drinking water existing on the site. The park has a variety of animals and plants on show and visitors can do a short trail across the park. Another important green reserve in the city is the Benjamim Maranhão Botanical Garden, aka "Mata do Buraquinho", which is a forest reserve area and wildlife sanctuary, where visitors can do trails in a piece of the Atlantic Forest.
For those interested in getting to know the oldest part of the town, the Historic Center of João Pessoa features several ancient buildings. The Historic Center is also the location of the São Francisco Cultural Center, listed by IPHAN as National Historical and Artistic Heritage since 2007. It comprises the Convent of Saint Anthony and the beautiful Church of Saint Francis from where visitors can have an incredible outlook of the Sanhauá River, the birthplace of the city. Still in the Historic Center are the Globo Hotel and the Casa da Pólvora, two other important sights of the city.

Testimonials about Campus I
- Felipe Pedro, student at Campus I
"Campus I is huge, very green and very beautiful. Students can choose from many restaurants at affordable prices. Outside the campus, in the surrounding areas nearby, there are excellent places to live and eat, always at affordable prices”
- Marcos Aragão, student at Campus I
"I really like living in João Pessoa because, although it is a capital city, it is not as urban as it may seem at a first glance; rather, it is a quiet city with calm traffic where everything is close by. I like the campus because it is very green, the Center of Human Sciences is very large and there are several events both in the auditoriums and outdoors. Despite its size, it is easy to get around.”
- Larissa Manoela, student at Campus I
"UFPB Campus I is extremely complete. The academic facilities: classrooms, libraries and integration spaces are large and pleasant. In addition, Campus I has a variety of services to make life easier for students, such as restaurants, banks, bookstores, farmers market, and stationery shops. The Center of Medical Sciences is also located on Campus I and is very organized; in addition to large and air-conditioned classrooms, elevators and cafeteria, it boasts a very complete and organized library. The laboratories used for the practical classes and the University Hospital are also of excellent quality, which provides what is takes for very effective practical teaching. The city of João Pessoa is a topic apart. Students from other cities or even states usually feel very welcome in the city. The pleasant weather, the beaches, the traffic and the tranquility when compared to other capital cities are qualities that reinforce the welcoming aspect of João Pessoa.”
